Zygaena lonicerae – Watercolor Butterfly Illustration
I painted this watercolor illustration of Zygaena lonicerae, commonly known as the Six-Spot Burnet moth, to celebrate the remarkable beauty hidden within the insect world. Its deep blue wings adorned with vivid crimson spots create one of nature’s most striking color combinations. Through transparent watercolor layers, I aimed to capture both the delicate structure of the moth and the vibrant contrast that makes this species instantly recognizable. This artwork is perfect for natural history collections, botanical and entomology-themed décor, educational materials, field guides, scientific publications, greeting cards, stationery, and wildlife-inspired creative projects. It also works beautifully in children’s rooms, nature centers, classrooms, and galleries dedicated to biodiversity and conservation.
While painting, I was fascinated by the elegance of this small creature and the harmony of its colors. I wanted the illustration to reflect the wonder of observing wildlife up close in a summer meadow. The result is a detailed yet artistic watercolor that brings curiosity, scientific interest, and natural beauty into any space or design project.
